Matilda Thomas
A very finely woven Pima pictorial Snake basket, polychrome, circa 1970, by Matilda Thomas (Tohono O’odham) showing four rattlesnakes, a bat, is accented by red coyote tracks and its perimeter is completed with ticking. Willow, devil’s claw, yucca over three-rod foundation.
This Pima basket was a commissioned piece that was intended to be reminiscent of the Maggie Painter Chemehuevi basket that was depicted in the Arizona Highways/Basket Edition, July 1975, Page 28. The EBC basket is not the original Maggie Painter basket.
