A colorful red bandana sets off this well done small portrait of a mountain man. Howard Rogers shows the man set against a muted background of bold, quick brush strokes. The man’s face is partially hidden in the shadows thrown by the large hat he wears. His shoulders are bathed in sunlight and the bandana worn around his head adds a bright swath of color and focuses our attention on the man’s bearded face.
Born in San Diego in 1932, Howard Rogers has spent a lifetime expressing himself through his artwork. He began his career like many of his peers as an illustrator after studying at the Art Center of Los Angeles. Initially he worked within the confines of the Detroit Auto Industry, but after a decade Howard relocated to the east coast and began illustrating for publishing houses, think Harlequin Romance Novels, Reader’s Digest, McCall's and Good Housekeeping, miscellaneous advertising agencies as well as illustrating for the W.S. George Collector Plates Series.
Eventually, Howard decided to take his art in a different direction and he pivoted westward. Under Big Sky Country, he immersed himself in the lifestyle and culture surrounded by cowboys, horses, rodeos and the great outdoors. Howard is nationally known for his western paintings, but his subjects also focus on figuratives, nudes, florals and wildlife.
