American Indian Baskets (Yavapai)

This 19” Yavapai tray is complex. The checkered four-pointed star expands outward and shows four horses in the center and four larger horses at the rim which are situated between four snake bands. It was woven with willow and devil’s claw over a three-rod foundation.

A 17” Yavapai Tray, circa 1920, features an expanding positive/negative rosette or star design that begins with six-points at the base, another in the middle featuring six human figures and two large dogs, then six more human figures at the rim with twelve dogs balanced between six negative coyote tracks. It is constructed of willow and devil’s claw over a three-rod foundation.
