Born in Ontario, Oregon, in 1949, Tom Browning has been painting professionally since 1972. Starting out with Western and wildlife as a choice of subject matter, Tom has had a multifaceted career that has provided many incredible paintings of different subjects and mediums. His love of the West has always been his biggest inspiration that has kept the Western theme alive on his easel. Now working primarily in oils, Browning feels he is creating his strongest and most meaningful work.

In 1994, Tom wrote an instructional book entitled Timeless Techniques for Better Oil Paintings which was acclaimed by many schools and painting students as one of the best ever on the market. As a result he entered into a 10-year phase of giving back to the art world as he traveled around the country teaching workshops and giving painting demonstrations in addition to his rigorous painting schedule. Recently, Tom chose to curtail the workshops in order to concentrate solely on painting. His paintings have been described as “a moment in time full of impact and emotion with a keen observation of light.”

In 2009, Tom won the prestigious Prix de West Purchase Award at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. And, after being elected to the Cowboy Artists of America later that same year, he said, “2009 was a big year, but I really look forward to the camaraderie of the group and hanging along with the best artists in Western art.” In 2010, he won the silver medal for his oil painting, Fading Light.

Tom and his wife, Joyce, live in central Oregon.
