Hopi sculpture artist Edward Honyestewa is from the Hopi Mesas located in northeastern Arizona. He is of the Coyote Clan from Hotevilla Village and was raised at lower Moenkopi. Edward began carving stone when he attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe in 1986. He also carves katsina as well.
The Hopi Butterfly, or Palhikmana, is a maiden who appears during a special ceremonial dance. Much preparation is involved as female participants are taught the dance steps and moving with the tableta, or headdress, on. They are also schooled in the proper ceremonial etiquette and most importantly the significance of the ceremony… what it means to be a young Hopi women, her purpose and meaning within the Hopi culture.
