Debra Duwyenie and Harvey Chavarria
Debra Duwyenie is renowned for her highly-polished, incised pottery. She is the granddaughter of Petra Gutierrez and the niece of noted potters Gloria Garcia (Goldenrod) & Lois Gutierrez. Debra uses the traditional methods of hand-coil, stone polish, paint, open fire, and hand sgraffito designs. The latter of which is worked into the clay before it is fired, adding to the difficulty. Shown here are pieces Debra made with Harvey Chavarria (1943-1991); they have signed “Debra + Harvey.” Two pots reveal hummingbirds getting nectar. The third and fourth pots showcase the sun encircled by Avanyu (or Awanyu), a Tewa deity, the guardian of water. All are surrounded by mountains.
