This finely woven 5” deep, 10” diameter, Panamint Bowl has four identical design elements consisting of centered rows of stacked triangles, each flanked by inverted stacked triangles, and followed by two additional flanks of diagonal rows of inverted triangles. Between each of those design elements are three diamond shapes, one balanced at the rim while the remaining two are stacked below. This bowl was woven with willow, devil’s claw, and bullrush over a three-rod foundation.
Panamint weavers most often decorated their baskets with geometric shapes, insects and other animals most often visualized in their mountainous summer habitats or in their winter Death Valley abodes such as snakes, butterflies and birds.
