A Long Way From the Wagon, by Bruce Green
By Design and Chance: Shown is Bruce Greene’s horse, Blue Duck, which he got from fellow CA artist, Bill Owen, at a round up on the JA Ranch in 2002. Atop the horse is Bruce’s friend, Wade Morris.
Bruce chose the great Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas handle for the backdrop. He was concerned in the early stages of painting about how he was going to paint the storm. And though he had some references and prior sketches of approaching storms, none of them seemed just right.
He decided to begin by painting the figures and worry about the storm later. And to his good fortune just as he had reached the point of having to begin painting the storm, he looked out his studio window and there it was. And he began to furiously paint as a storm thundered by.
“What a wonderful blessing! I originally intended to call this painting Always Welcome, but my storm became so ominous looking it seemed to be more than what would be welcome even in West Texas.”
